The Ave
Youths congregated on the sidewalks of University Way NE, or The Ave., in Seattle, Washington, USA during the height of the economic crisis in 2009. There was a juxtaposition of character between the youths and passersby. The young folks were often upbeat and laughing, enjoying camaraderie and community. Their spirits were youthful, of exploration and often optimism and resolution, despite the daunting odds of living with minimal resources. There was a freedom inherent in their minimalist predilections.
When revisiting this project in 2024 I found that the youthful community had all but disappeared. Many forces contributed to this change, from urban development, more housing resources, decentralization of social services, and the bane of opioids.
