I heard that the poet Gary Snyder spent time in Kyoto, there is a Bad Religion song called Kyoto Now!, and landscape architects often advocate for a visit. I was able to delve into the neighborhoods, gardens, and shrines. It was pleasant to drink local whiskey and wander amongst the narrow streets into the evening. I was often dodging bicyclists while I logged many miles on foot-paths amongst the lush green foliage. I can see how the place inspired Snyder’s poetry, particularly in the 1950’s when Japan was more insular and still recovering from WWII. My trip was like a dram rather than a bottle of whiskey to enjoy over time.
