I photographed the Latino workers in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle in the spring of 2001 as a case study about globalization.
I had just completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Geography at the University of Washington with an emphasis on Latin America and sustainable development. This created a framework for my understanding the motivations of the workers, but I found their genial character was more meaningful.
More than twenty years later, I realize that the photos now show the personalities of Latino immigrants that are rarely portrayed in the media. It’s my hope that the images add to the ongoing conversations about immigration and migration in Seattle and elsewhere.
